Resort Guide
Hokkaido's flagship resort, built around exceptionally consistent powder snowfall and a long-established international resort scene — Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Annupuri and Niseko Village are linked and can largely be skied as one connected area. Chalet-style and self-contained accommodation is the norm here more than in most Japanese resorts, which suits families and groups wanting their own space and kitchen rather than a hotel room. It's also the furthest of the three from Tokyo, routed via Sapporo's New Chitose airport.
A cluster of resorts in Nagano Prefecture that hosted the downhill events at the 1998 Winter Olympics, with more varied terrain across its linked areas than a single Niseko-style resort footprint. It's meaningfully closer to Tokyo than Niseko — a shinkansen to Nagano followed by a road transfer — which makes it the more practical choice for shorter trips or itineraries combining skiing with a Tokyo or Kansai city stay.
Also in Nagano, Nozawa combines a genuine ski resort with a traditional onsen village character — the town itself has a long-standing tradition of free, public bathhouses scattered through its streets, giving it an après-ski identity closer to a ryokan town than an international resort. It's smaller and more traditionally Japanese in feel than Niseko or Hakuba, which suits clients who want the onsen-village atmosphere as much as the skiing itself.
Further afield, Zao in Yamagata (Tohoku) is known less for powder skiing than for its "snow monster" (juhyo) frost-covered trees in deep winter — a genuinely different, more scenic-led draw than the powder-focused resorts, and one that pairs well with an onsen-town stay rather than a multi-day ski program. We treat it as a distinct request from a Niseko or Hakuba brief rather than a substitute for either.
Who Books This
Many ski clients have already done the Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka circuit and are back specifically for the snow. They tend to know what they want and value a specialist who can move fast on chalet inventory that closes out early, rather than a generic city-itinerary quote.
Multi-family or extended-family ski trips need chalet-style accommodation with the right bedroom count, mixed-ability lesson and guiding arrangements, and a non-ski activity plan for anyone not skiing that day — planned as one file, not assembled piecemeal.
Clients wanting terrain beyond the groomed runs need a qualified local guide, full stop — this is not terrain to access independently, and we brief agents and clients on that clearly before confirming any backcountry component.

Equipment & Logistics
Equipment hire in Niseko, Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen is widely available and generally excellent, but sizing and quality vary property to property — pre-booking through the same file as the accommodation means the right size and category (from basic rental to demo-level equipment) is confirmed and waiting rather than sorted out in a queue on the first ski morning. Clients bringing their own equipment need this flagged early too, since some accommodation types have limited boot-drying and storage space that's worth confirming in advance.
Lift passes are generally straightforward to arrange as multi-day or season passes covering the linked resort areas, but peak-week pricing and blackout considerations around the busiest school-holiday weeks are worth flagging to clients pricing out a trip. Airport-to-resort transfer times are longer than clients often expect — Niseko is a meaningful road transfer from New Chitose airport, and Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen both involve a shinkansen leg followed by a road transfer from Nagano — so arrival-day planning should build in that travel time rather than scheduling activities on day one.
