Cherry blossom gets most of the trade attention, but autumn foliage (koyo) is arguably the more forgiving — and more logistically interesting — season to sell, because its longer window and strong regional spread give agents more routing flexibility than the notoriously short and unpredictable blossom season.

Why timing varies so much more than cherry blossom

Cherry blossom moves north over a few compressed weeks. Autumn foliage is driven by both latitude and elevation, which spreads the season out considerably: colour starts in Hokkaido and the high mountains of the Japanese Alps in late September to early October, reaches Nikko and Nagano by mid-to-late October, and doesn't arrive in Kyoto and Tokyo until mid-to-late November — sometimes into early December for the latest-turning spots in Kyoto specifically.

This wider window is genuinely useful for agents: unlike cherry blossom, where a client locked into fixed dates either hits it or misses it, an autumn client with some date flexibility can be routed to chase peak colour city by city rather than gambling on a single week.

A rough regional timing guide

These windows shift year to year with weather, so treat this as a planning guide rather than a fixed calendar — worth confirming closer to travel dates for any itinerary built specifically around foliage.

Routing strategy: chase the colour south

The strongest autumn itineraries are built to move roughly north-to-south (or high-elevation-to-low) over the trip, so the group encounters peak or near-peak colour at each stop rather than arriving either too early or too late at a single-region itinerary. A Hokkaido or Takayama start, moving through Nikko or Hakone, and finishing in Kyoto, lines up naturally with how the season actually progresses.

Booking pressure and hotel rates

Kyoto in particular sees a genuine rate and availability squeeze during peak koyo weeks — comparable to, and in some well-located properties exceeding, cherry blossom demand. Hotels and ryokan in the city's temple districts should be quoted and confirmed well ahead for November travel, not left to a closer-in booking window.

How we build autumn itineraries

We route clients through the season deliberately — sequencing cities to track the colour rather than treating foliage as a backdrop to a fixed Golden Route — and flag Kyoto's November hotel squeeze early in the quoting process so agents aren't caught out by availability closer to travel.
